View all therapy FAQs
What type of therapy do you offer? +

I work from an evidence-based and integrative approach, guided by the NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) guidelines where applicable. These guidelines provide evidence-based recommendations for the psychological treatment of a range of mental health concerns and help inform the therapeutic approach best suited to each client’s needs.

Rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach, therapy is tailored to the individual, their circumstances, therapeutic goals and the difficulties they would like support with.

The therapeutic approaches I draw from include:

  • Schema Therapy
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
  • Humanistic Therapy
  • Integrative Therapy
  • Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)

The specific approach used will depend on your needs and what is most appropriate for you at that stage of therapy.

What ages do you work with? +

I work with children from approximately three years of age, adolescents and adults.

The therapeutic approach naturally differs depending on age and developmental stage. For younger children, therapy is adapted to their developmental needs, while work with adolescents and adults is tailored to their individual needs and presenting concerns.

Where is the practice located? +

The practice is conveniently located at 79 Main Road, Plumstead, Cape Town, 7800, South Africa.

Further access and arrival information can be provided when your appointment is confirmed.

What can I expect during the first consultation? +

The first two to three sessions are primarily focused on getting to know you and establishing a comfortable and trusting therapeutic relationship.

During these sessions, I will also gather relevant background and assessment information to better understand your current concerns, history, needs and therapeutic goals.

This gives us a strong foundation from which to develop an individualised treatment plan that is appropriate for you and what you would like to work towards in therapy.

Do you offer a short “fit check” before I commit to therapy? +

I understand that finding the right psychologist is important, and it is completely reasonable to want to get a sense of whether the therapeutic relationship feels like a good fit.

I do not offer separate 15 to 30 minute “fit check” consultations, either in person or online. In my experience, this is generally not enough time to meaningfully understand what has brought you to therapy or to get an accurate sense of what working together may feel like.

For this reason, I recommend booking a full initial consultation. This allows us enough time to begin getting to know one another, explore what you would like support with and consider whether my therapeutic approach is appropriate for your needs.

There is also no expectation that booking an initial consultation commits you to an ongoing therapy process. You are welcome to use the first session to begin determining whether you feel comfortable continuing.

Do you accept medical aid? +

Yes. I am contracted with most South African medical aids and can submit claims directly to your medical aid on your behalf.

Medical aid sessions are charged according to the applicable rate of your particular medical aid and plan.

Depending on your available benefits, claims may be paid from:

  • Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMBs)
  • a Mental Health Programme or Mental Health Benefit
  • Medical Aid Savings
  • other applicable psychological benefits available on your plan

You may also choose to pay privately and submit the invoice to your medical aid yourself for possible reimbursement.

Please keep in mind that medical aid benefits differ between schemes and plans. Clients remain responsible for monitoring their available benefits and for following up directly with their medical aid regarding benefit queries, claim delays or processing errors.

Can I use Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMBs) for therapy with you? +

Potentially, yes.

If you already have an approved Prescribed Minimum Benefit (PMB) for psychological treatment, the practice can submit the relevant therapy claims directly to your medical aid in accordance with your approved benefit.

If you have not yet been approved for PMB benefits, I will first need to assess whether your clinical presentation meets the relevant criteria. Where clinically indicated and appropriate, I can assist with the PMB application process on your behalf.

It is important to understand that PMB approval is not automatic or guaranteed. Eligibility depends on whether the clinical criteria for a qualifying PMB condition are met, as well as the requirements of your medical aid.

Where PMB funding has been approved and the sessions fall within the authorised benefit, invoices can generally be submitted directly to the medical aid rather than requiring you to pay for those sessions upfront.

What are your therapy fees? +

Private or self-funded sessions are R1,200 per 50-minute session.

Private sessions are payable via EFT 48 hours before the confirmed appointment.

For clients using medical aid, sessions are billed according to the applicable medical aid rate for your particular scheme and plan. Claims are submitted directly to the medical aid where applicable.

I am also happy to assess and assist with applications for qualifying PMB patients where clinically appropriate.

How does payment work if I am paying privately? +

For private or self-funded clients:

  • The fee is R1,200 per 50-minute session.
  • Statements can be provided upon written request.
How does payment work if I use medical aid? +

For medical aid clients, sessions are charged according to the applicable rate of your medical aid.

Where applicable, claims may be submitted to your:

  • PMB benefit
  • Mental Health Programme
  • Mental Health Benefit
  • Medical Aid Savings

The practice submits claims on your behalf. However, clients remain responsible for monitoring their available benefits and following up directly with their medical aid regarding benefit queries, processing delays, rejected claims or administrative errors.

If the medical aid does not settle an account within 30 days, the client or person responsible for payment remains liable for the outstanding amount.

Interest may be charged on overdue or outstanding accounts.

+
What should I do if I am experiencing a mental health emergency?

My practice is not an emergency or crisis service, and I may not always be immediately available outside of scheduled sessions.

If you are experiencing an urgent mental health or safety concern, please do not wait until your next therapy session or until you are able to reach me.

If there is an immediate risk to your safety or someone else's safety, please:

  • go to your nearest hospital emergency department; or
  • contact an appropriate emergency or mental health crisis service.

You can also visit the National Helplines section of this website for additional crisis support resources.

Therapy can be an important part of ongoing support, but it should not replace emergency medical or crisis intervention when immediate assistance is required.

Do you provide psycholegal or forensic services?

No. I do not provide psycholegal, forensic or medico-legal assessment services.

This includes assessments, reports or professional opinions intended primarily for use in:

  • court proceedings;
  • custody or parental rights disputes;
  • divorce proceedings;
  • criminal or civil litigation;
  • reunification matters;
  • compensation or damages claims; or
  • other formal legal proceedings.

My practice is focused on therapeutic psychological services rather than forensic or psycholegal evaluation.

What is your cancellation and rescheduling policy? +

Appointments require at least 48 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule.

If you would like to reschedule an appointment, the replacement appointment should take place within the same calendar week, subject to availability.

The full session fee will be charged if an appointment is:

  • cancelled with less than 48 hours’ notice; or
  • missed.

For private clients, this is the applicable private session fee. For medical aid clients, the applicable medical aid session rate will apply.

Where appropriate, a doctor’s note may be accepted to waive a late cancellation fee in the event of illness.

The cancellation policy allows sufficient notice for the appointment time to be offered to another client.
